Stories in Rogues – “How the Marquis Got His Coat Back” by Neil Gaiman

You may have read the title and wondered, hmm, what is a Marquis? And what is so special about this coat? Well, normally I wouldn’t want to ruin it for you–and I guess I won’t–so let’s dig a little deeper and see what this tale is all about, and more importantly, whether or not you should be reading it.

Should you read this? I don’t know. I think the short answer is no. I didn’t like it, and that’s being generous. There are mushroom people, elephant people, and all sorts of other really fantastical shit that didn’t resonate with me. I’ve actually come to find that fantasy that gets too far into weird types of people doesn’t appeal to me–or maybe I haven’t found the writer who does it in a way I enjoy.

There is wit in this writing. Wit and skill, but the Marguis–whatever the fuck that is–and his obsession with this coat, and the bizarre scenario he gets in … It’s just not that interesting. I would skip it. I trudged through it. I sacrificed myself for you. For you!
